Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg is a regional leader in health care for southeast Kansas. Their comprehensive Cancer Center was among the first in the region and is fully certified by the American College of Surgeons. The Via Christi Heart Center features a state-of-the-art catheterization lab and is supported by our newly renovated $2.6 million Cardiac Stepdown Unit. The Emergency Room is recognized as a Level III Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.Their specialty service line is extensive and includes Orthopedics, Diagnostics, Surgery, Physical Therapy and Occupational Health.
Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg is accredited by The Joint Commission and holds memberships in the American Hospital Association, the Kansas Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association.
The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas is a federally qualified patient-centered health center dedicated to providing quality health care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Originally opened by Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center (now Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg) as an extension of its mission, it is now a patient-owned and operated organization serving more than 20,000 children and adults annually.
The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas employs more than 200 professionals and support staff at six clinic sites in Crawford, Cherokee, Montgomery and Allen counties. The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors which includes patients and community representatives.
Medicare, Medicaid, HealthWave and private insurance are accepted. No-one is refused care due to inability to pay.
Girard Medical Center was recognized by the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care (KFMC) as one of the Kansas Critical Access Hospitals leading the way in best practices when inpatient quality reporting (IQR) is compared. By incorporating the best-practice medicine and empowering the patient to be part of that care, KFMC stated “Girard Medical Center is leading the way and sharing successful strategies with other facilities within the state. Thus, improving care for all Kansans.”
Girard Medical Center is a general medical and surgical hospital in Girard, KS, with 35 beds. Survey data for the latest year available shows that 5,033 patients visited the hospital’s emergency room. The hospital had a total of 1,205 admissions. Its physicians performed 136 inpatient and 731 outpatient surgeries.
The Pittsburg area has several privately-owned nursing homes and assisted living complexes. These facilities provide a range of services, including intermediate and skilled nursing care and care for the mentally and physically challenged. A variety of hospice care services are available to provide health care for the terminally ill.
The Crawford County Mental Health Center, in partnership with other agencies, coordinates general health and welfare services and substance abuse treatment for area residents. Several locally-owned chiropractic offices offer nutritional therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, rehabilitation and massage therapy.
Child Care
Quality child care is essential to sustaining Pittsburg’s impressive economic growth and unmatched quality of life. The Family Resource Center opened in 1997 to provide excellent and affordable childcare, preschool, and other educational opportunities. Services include USD 250 Adult Education Center; Early Childhood Special Education; Smart Start Crawford County, and a Parent Resource Library can also be found on the Family Resource Center campus.

Education
Pittsburg State University
Along with serving as one of the primary economic engines of southeast Kansas, education is the foundation of the Pittsburg area’s future. One of six Kansas Regents Universities, Pittsburg State University continues to report record enrollment. Midwest values and hospitality are found on this campus of more than 7,400 students where the student to faculty ratio is 19-to-1. At Pittsburg State University, students can select from over 100 academic programs within the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Technology. The growth at Pitt State is evident by the impressive amount of construction on and around the campus. Two of the most noticeable projects currently taking place on campus are the $33 million Center for the Arts and the $13 million Robert W. Plaster Center (Indoor Event Facility).
Pittsburg
The Pittsburg area also features top-quality primary education. USD 250 (Pittsburg Community Schools) boasts over 2,600 students and 500 employees working daily to provide a first-class teaching and learning environment for students pre-kindergarten through the senior year of high school. USD 250 students are served in four elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative education setting. All facilities have been renovated or newly constructed since 2001 and contain the latest equipment and technology for facilitating student inquiry and learning. Approximately 60% of USD 250 staff possess a master’s degree or higher, which showcases the district’s immensely well-trained and experienced faculty.
Frontenac
USD 249 has been rich in tradition for many generations. The staff and parents work cooperatively to establish a partnership that ensures a quality education. Over the past several years, the district has implemented a research based curriculum in both math and reading. Students are achieving at a higher level than ever before as documented by recent Kansas State Assessment scores, with Standards of Excellence in Mathematics and Writing. USD 249’s technology programs are state-of-art and have been visited by schools from all across the country.
Cherokee
USD 247 is a district of 300 square miles, serving approximately 805 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Communities within the district are Cherokee, McCune, Weir, and West Mineral with Cherokee, McCune, and Weir being locations for K-8 attendance centers. All centers within the district are accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and provide a great comprehensive education through academic and vocational course offerings as well as a wide range of clubs and athletics.
Arma
USD 246 serves Arcadia, Arma, Franklin and Mulberry and recently unveiled an aggressive strategic plan of action.
St. Mary’s-Colgan
Don’t forget about the area’s top-notch parochial schools. St. Mary’s Elementary School and St. Mary’s-Colgan High School are not tuition-based, but rather are supported by Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and its stewardship program. Each family who sends their children to our schools agrees to the principles in a signed covenant and agrees to maintain a tithe to the parish. The schools feature an enrollment of 550 children, along with over 40 teachers and administrators and a combined annual parish and school budget of over $2 million. The elementary school class size is less than 24 and the high school classes smaller still.
Other Educational Options
Covenant Harvest Church offers K-12 classes and preschool classes for children ages 3-5 years old. They are located at 615 South Highway 69 in Pittsburg.
Countryside Christian School, a part of Countryside Christian Church, is a private school offering grades K-7. Beginning in 2015, it will offer grades K-8.
The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush is the site for unique learning facilities such as the Wm. L. Abernathy Science Center and rain forest, Mission Space Station, PSU/Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory, and Greenbush Archeological Dig. New to the Greenbush Campus will be biotechnology labs and a MediaGlobe Digital Planetarium especially designed to increase student achievement in math and science. Learning opportunities for students are by no means limited to the Greenbush Campus. The Greenbush Interactive Distance Learning Network, Virtual Prescriptive Learning, Migrant Education, and Virtual Greenbush provide students across the state with curriculum and learning experiences ranging from algebra and history to career/technical education and foreign language instruction.
