Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg is a regional leader in health care for southeast Kansas. The comprehensive Cancer Center was among the first in the region and is fully certified by the American College of Surgeons. The Via Christi Heart Center features a state-of-the-art catheterization lab and is supported by their newly renovated $2.6 million Cardiac Stepdown Unit. The Emergency Department is recognized as a Level III Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. Their speciality service line is extensive and includes Orthopedics, Diagnostics, Surgery, Physical Therapy and Occupational Health.
Open MRI of Pittsburg, home to the Hitachi AIRISII, provides the consistent high quality images needed for a comprehensive diagnosis. Century Surgery Associates provides quality health care for elective surgery. Renal Care Group moved to Pittsburg from Fort Scott in April 2004. Providing dialysis services since the 1980s, they merged with Four State Dialysis in 1998 and now serve more than 30 states and 320 facilities. Freeman Health System, based in nearby Joplin, Mo., opened a Pittsburg Healthplex recently that includes services such as primary care, family practice and psychiatry.
The Pittsburg area has several privately-owned nursing homes and assisted living complexes. These facilities provide a range of services, including intermediate and skilled nursing care and care for the mentally and physically challenged. The Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at Via Christi Hospital provides health care for the terminally ill.
The Crawford County Mental Health Center, in partnership with other agencies, coordinates general health and welfare services and substance abuse treatment for area residents. Several locally-owned chiropractic offices offer nutritional therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, rehabilitation and massage therapy.
